Flavonoids are one of the major secondary metabolites in plants, and have various and important physiological functions such as pigments, pathogen defense compounds, UV-absorbing agents, and regulators for auxin transport. These in planta functions are involved in localization of flavonoids in a plant body and also in a plant cell. On the other hand, it is known that flavonoids have features that can scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROSs). Flavonoids compartmentalized within vacuoles of the epidermal cells, however, cannot scavenge ROSs in more inner layers of cells and, if they can do, the effects would be restricted in the vacuole. To understand more deeply the physiological functions of already-accumulated flavonoids in plants, we analyze here the responses to -ray irradiation in Arabidopsis thaliana showing different flavonoid accumulation patterns.
